Failure IS an Option

So many times, we are told that failure is NEVER an option but this cannot be further from the truth. Failure CAN and IS an option as long as we keep trying and working towards our goal. We do not need to let FAILURE be our label for life but instead a stepping stone to success. There are SO many individuals, especially women, who have faced failure and do not let it win. For example, Oprah, she faced possible failure over and over because she is a woman, the color of her skin, her past and more. But she never let failure BECOME her and she is now LABELED as one of the richest women.

Last Tuesday we shared with the young women from Mighty Writers that failure does not need to become them but instead build them. We had the girls write down on a piece of paper five things about being a girl, these five things could be positive or negative. Each girl went around and shared their list…

-girls are too emotional

-girls are capable of multi-tasking

-girls can do more than men in particular areas such as pregnancy/childbirth

-girls are most likely to get paid less

-expectations are lower for girls

-girls are better at following directions

-girls can be more supportive

-girls have to work harder to show their worth

This is just a short list of what the girls shared the other night and it was very interesting and impressive to hear them share their thoughts. Often times the girls would find that something they put on their list as a positive was a negative on someone else’s list. The young women were able to see that what some might see as failure can also be their strength. To finish the night the young women answered some questions from their workbooks. The week 3 workbook consisted of the following questions:

1. What has failure looked like in your life?

2. How did I handle it?

3. If I could, would I change anything?

We also talked about the "recovery rule", which is to acknowledge the failure, forgive yourself and others, analyze what worked, what didn't and what would be done differently, recommit to moving forward and last but not least, CREATE A NEW PLAN! Failure does not need to be the end of your goal.
